When they [NASA] were soliciting applications for astronauts, they rejected people with pure histories of success and instead selected people who had had significant failures and bounced back from them" (Dweck 29).

Imagine that Poly has a selection philosophy similar to NASA's. You are applying to Poly as an incoming ninth grader and have been asked to write a short reflection of 250-300 words on a significant academic or school failure and how you bounced back. (Not your personal life.)

Coming from an asian american culture and background, I faced many race-related challenges to overcome. I was not fluent in english and so I was failing most of my classes except for math. I then started to read Dr. Seuss and New York Times articles. This lead my academic career to go very well from 6th to 9th grade. 

This was an important time when I bounced back from a hardship and it taught me a valuable lesson. The lesson was that no matter what, I could always bounce back by working at that weakness. I feel as though this situation has taught me a very valuable life skill.
