Imagine that Poly has a selection philosophy similar to NASA's. You are applying to Poly as an incoming ninth grader and have been asked to write a short reflection of 250-300 words on a significant academic or school failure and how you bounced back. (Not your personal life.)
Coming from an asian american culture and background, I faced many race-related challenges to overcome. I was not fluent in english and so I was failing most of my classes except for math. I then started to read Dr. Seuss and New York Times articles. This lead my academic career to go very well from 6th to 9th grade.
